≡ Art Beat: France-Based Korean Artist Kim Soungui Holds Exhibit At MMCA

Kim Soungui, a France-based South Korean artist who has experimented with the intersection of fine arts, philosophy and science through her artwork, is showing a retrospective exhibit at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in central Seoul.
Named after a poem she wrote under the same title, "Lazy Clouds," the avant-garde artist attempts to call into question the values that society has come to endorse under the influence of capitalism.

The concept of "Lazy Clouds" challenges the notion that society must strive for productivity and avoid laziness at all costs.
Kim deems the lazy attitude necessary for doing well in life as it allows one to be attentive and fosters creativity.
In the retrospective, the artist explores this idea in a series of art works spanning from drawings and photographs to installation art.
Presenting Kim's 200 artworks, the exhibit displays her worldview within three themes, all of which reflect the formation of her artistic perspective through a variety of personal experiences.
After graduating from Seoul National University in 1971, Kim left for Nice, France, where she had the opportunity to interact with pioneering artists, of the Fluxus movement including John Cage and Ira Schneider.
Besides many colorful artworks Kim produced during her archery training, the exhibit displays a collaboration project she produced with Paik Nam June in New York, where she concentrated on multimedia art.
The wide range in tone and material reflects Kim's versatile art world, which is on display at MMCA Seoul until January 27th, 2020.
